Do you know how to behave in case of breakdown or accident?

Being informed can save your life!

A correct and conscious behavior in the tunnel can save your life and that of other road users. The tunnels of Autostrada Pedemontana Lombarda (APL) are equipped with the latest safety devices, but remember that even the most sophisticated technological means cannot replace the sense of responsibility of the travelers. It is therefore important that users are aware of the devices and the present signs in the tunnel and the behaviors to adopt in case of adverse events. In particular, here are some of the likely events that may occur in the tunnel and the approach to be taken to avoid dangerous consequences and to safeguard yourself and the others.

1) QUEUE

WHAT TO DO

In case of sudden queue or slowdowns, it is appropriate to:

  1. Turn on your hazard lights.
  2. Maintain an appropriate distance from the vehicle ahead.
  3. Stop the vehicle and turn off the engine if traffic is stuck. DO NOT perform a U-turn
  4. Remain in the car and wait for the green light.

2) CLOSING OF THE TUNNEL

WHAT TO DO

In any case, if they are active fixed lanterns or the red crosses at the entrance of the tunnel (for both simple queue and accident) is appropriate to:

  1. Do not go into the gallery if you see the fixed lanterns or red crosses at the entrance of the tunnel.
  2. Stop the engine and wait for the green light without leaving the vehicle.

3) BREAKDOWN

WHAT TO DO

If you find a breakdown in your vehicle, you should:

  1. Pull in the emergency lane and / or reach the first rest area.
  2. Wear a high visibility jacket (required by the Highway Code).
  3. Place the warning triangle at a distance of at least 100 meters from the vehicle.
  4. Call the control center APL by equipment SOS and wait for directions.

4) ACCIDENT

WHAT TO DO

In case of accident, you must:

  1. Turn on your hazard lights.
  2. As far as possible to stop the vehicle at the right edge of the roadway.
  3. Stop the engine.

5) IN CASE OF SMOKE / FIRE

In case of smoke and / or fire in your vehicle:

  1. Turn on your hazard lights
  2. Turn off the engine.
  3. Wear high visibility jacket.
  4. Go to the nearest SOS device discoverable by dedicated luminous signs and call the APL control center and wait for instructions.

6) EVACUATION BY EMERGENCY EXIT OR BY PASS

WHAT TO DO

  1. Leave the vehicle.
  2. Find following the signs and the light guide the nearest emergency exit or by pass and get to safety through:
    • EMERGENCY EXIT: pass the two gates, reach the ladder and climb to the surface;
    • BY PASS: cross the link to go in the other gallery, paying close attention to the spill itself.
  3. If necessary, contact APL control center with the SOS device inside the emergency exit and wait for instructions.

7) MAINTENANCE

WHAT TO DO

If a part of the tunnel is closed or under maintenance:

  1. Follow the instructions and warnings given on variable message signs (VMS) external and internal to the tunnel.
  2. Follow the directions of the arrow cross panels (possible circulation to two-way traffic).
  3. Follow the signage of the construction site.

THE HANDBOOK OF SAFETY ON THE ROAD

  1. Fasten always the front and rear seat belts and use the appropriate seat travel for children.
  2. Obey the speed limits and the safety distance from the vehicles.
  3. Occupy always the freer lane to right.
  4. In emergency cases where it is necessary to leave the vehicle, pay attention to traffic.

  10. Check the vehicle before leaving: fuel levels, oil, wiper fluid, etc.
